Carbonate-Bicarbonate Coating Buffer at pH 9.6 is the classical alkaline buffer used to immobilise antigens and capture proteins onto polystyrene ELISA plates.
Overview
Carbonate-Bicarbonate Coating Buffer, 50 mM, pH 9.6 - Carbonate-Bicarbonate Coating Buffer at pH 9.6 is the classical alkaline buffer used to immobilise antigens and capture proteins onto polystyrene ELISA plates.
The alkaline pH improves adsorption of many proteins by changing surface charge and hydrophobic interaction behaviour. The GMExpression formulation is azide-free and sterile-filtered.

Instruction
1Dilute or use directly according to the coating protocol.
2Add antigen or antibody to the buffer at the validated coating concentration.
3Incubate plate as required by the assay, typically overnight at 2-8 deg C or 1-2 hours at room temperature.
4After coating, wash and block the plate using the assay-specific blocking buffer.
Note
- Azide is intentionally omitted to reduce hazardous waste and improve compatibility with enzyme-labelled detection systems.
Cautions
Caution. Carbonate buffers can drift if repeatedly opened because CO2 exchange changes the carbonate/bicarbonate balance.
Caution. Not recommended for proteins known to lose activity or conformation at alkaline pH.
Storage and Expiry · Safety
- Store at 2-8 deg C with cap tightly closed.
- Unopened shelf life: 12 months from manufacture after QC validation.
- Transport. Ships at ambient temperature in insulated packaging; brief transit temperature excursions are tolerated. Refrigerate at 2-8 deg C on receipt and protect from freezing.
- Handling and PPE. Wear a laboratory coat, nitrile gloves, and safety glasses for routine handling. Alkaline (pH 9.6); avoid eye and prolonged skin contact. Consult the Safety Data Sheet before use.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Why pH 9.6?
The pH 9.6 formulation is the established ELISA coating condition for many antigens and antibodies.
Q2. Can this be used as a wash buffer?
No. It is a coating buffer. For wash steps use PBS-T, TBS-T, or the assay manufacturer's specified wash buffer.
